Contact Lens Care

 

Wearing contact lenses is easy, but requires responsibility. The FDA classifies contact lenses as medical devices and should be treated as such.  Negligent contact lens care and wear can lead to several serious eye problems including potential blindness. Following these simple do's and don'ts can help keep extend the life of your contacts and keep your eyes healthy.

Contact Lens Do’s & Don’ts

Do:
  • follow your doctor's recommended contact lens wearing schedule. 
  • wash your hands with a mild soap and dry them with a lint-free towel before touching your contacts.
  • insert or remove your contacts in the same order (left then right or vice versa) to avoid getting lenses mixed up.
  • clean, rinse, and disinfect your contact lenses each time you remove them.
  • discard the leftover contact lens solution in your case when you aren't using it for storage.
  • keep all solution bottles closed when not in use.
  • clean your contact lens case daily.
  • replace your contact lens case every three months.
  • remove contacts before you go swimming.
  • contact your lens provider if you experience any lens irritation or infection.

  • Don’t:
  • allow soaps, cosmetics, or other substances to come into contact with your lenses.
  • expose your contacts to any water: tap, distilled, lake or ocean water.
  • substitute sterile saline solutions for multi-purpose solutions.
  • touch the tip of a contact lens care solution bottle to any surface, including your finger or your contact lens.
  • re-use—or add additional solution to—old contact lens care solution in the case.
  • wear contacts for longer than the prescribed time.
  • use solution after the expiration date marked on the bottle.
  • wear your lenses if you experience any signs of irritation or infection - instead, make an appointment to see your doctor!
